What is polyethylene?
Polyethylene (PE) is a thermoplastic resin material produced by the polymerization of ethylene. Chemically, polyethylene molecules are either linear or branched, formed through an addition polymerization reaction of ethylene monomers. Depending on the polymerization method, molecular weight, and chain structure, polyethylene can be classified into various types, such as high-pressure polyethylene, low-pressure polyethylene, and linear low-density polyethylene. These different types of polyethylene exhibit distinct physical and chemical properties—like density, molecular weight, and crystallinity—and, as a result, each finds its own unique applications in diverse industries.
Polyethylene is widely used in the manufacturing of films, packaging bags, containers, pipes, wires and cables, everyday household items, and more—thanks to its outstanding properties such as excellent cold-temperature resistance (with a minimum service temperature ranging from -100°C to -70°C), chemical stability, resistance to most acid and alkali attacks, insolubility in common solvents at room temperature, low water absorption, and superior electrical insulation performance. Additionally, polyethylene can be processed into a variety of products using methods like blow molding, extrusion, and injection molding.
Additionally, polyethylene is an environmentally friendly material that can be recycled and reused, aligning with the principles of sustainable development. However, polyethylene does not easily degrade in natural environments, which could lead to environmental pollution issues. Therefore, during the production and use of polyethylene, it’s essential to monitor its environmental impact and implement appropriate measures to minimize pollution.
